Lace Up

April 16, 2013

The Boston Marathon is the crown jewel of races. If you have competed in Boston, you have clout with in the running community. The Boston Marathon is one of the most challenging courses. Then there is New England in the spring, you never know what kind of conditions you are going to be running in. You do have to qualify to get in to the race, but it is one of the few races that accepts people with disabilities. Per Wikipedia, in addition to a wheelchair division (established in 1976), the “Boston Marathon also hosts a blind/visually impaired division and a mobility impaired program. Similar to the running divisions, a set of realistic qualifying times has been developed for these divisions to motivate aspiring athletes and ensure competitive excellence”.

I am a runner. Maybe some day, a Boston Marathoner.

I get up and run every week. It brings me joy. It clears my head. It makes decision easier. It makes my body stronger. It makes me stable. It males me calm. It makes me a better person.

I think in miles. I think in kilometers. I invest in clothes labeled “DriFit”, “HeatGear”, “ColdGear”, and “Climalite”. I wear pacing watches and have 6 different running apps on my iPhone and iPod. I also own some expensive socks!

I’ve learned more things about myself through running. I’ve met new people. I’ve made new friends. I am surrounded by people who understand my passion, my challenges, and my triumphs. They know what goes in to training, to running and to persevering. I’ve become part of a community.

Yesterday my community was shaken. Today it grows stronger.

Proof was all over Facebook, runners went out and did what they do – they RAN

The Flash was out this morning doing 4.09 miles for Boston. People wore past Boston Marathon shirts or past race shirts on their runs (or for those who couldn’t get out to run today, like me and B-rad) we wore our race colors to the office (Dress codes do not apply after national tragedies – fuck business casual!)

To quote a passage from Christopher McDougall‘s national best seller Born to Run,

“And when things look worst, we run the most. Three times, America has seen distance-running skyrocket, and it’s always in the midst of a national crisis. The first boom came during the Great Depression, when more than two hundred runners set the trend by racing forty miles a day across the country in the Great American Foot Race. Running then went dormant, only to catch fire again in the early ’70′s, when we were struggling to recover from Vietnam, the Cold War, race riots, a criminal president, and the murders of three beloved leaders. And the third distance boom? One year after the September 11 attacks, trail-running suddenly became the fastest growing outdoor sport in the county.”

So next spring, expect to see record numbers show up to the nation’s oldest race, cause runners don’t back down. Those who aren’t running now are going to be even more motivated to start. Like everything else, it starts with a single step.

Coming Soon, I Move in to a Van Down by the River

April 16, 2013

My running reputation is becoming more legendary than my actual running. People seem to think that I am capable of gargantuan feats, like a Ragnar Relay. What is that you ask? Let me tell you….

A Ragnar Relay is an “overnight running relay race that makes testing your limits a team sport” A team of 12 people will pile in to two vans and take turns running 200 miles or so. This is something my Other Sister has been dying to do, so when my good friend B-Rad texted me asking if I would be interested cause a few of his runners dropped out I did the only thing a good friend and sister would do and said “my sister and I will do it”.

So now I’m registered to live in a van starting May 3rd; although this one isn’t down by the river, but will be moving along the coast of Cape Cod, starting in Hull, MA and ending in Provincetown, MA. This should be interesting.

Turn Up The Heat! – Match.com Stir Event at Sur La Table

I’m on Match.com

I’ve been on there since the end of February and I haven’t been having much luck. You would think someone who has such a witty blog fully of glowing insights about the state of the universe, would find a plethora of emails from match suitors in her inbox. But alas, I don’t. I do however, have a plethora of emails from Match.com regarding their “Stir Events” Perhaps you have seen the commercial for these. They are off line, (aka real world) events where match subscribers can meet. It’s a nice thing for those of us who are better in person than online (yes readers, I am even more awesome in real life if you can possible believe that!) Getting in to these events are next to impossible however. Match sends you an email and if you don’t react quickly, it sells out before you even get a chance to think about it. So of course when I saw one so close to home (most are in NYC / larger metropolitan areas), I jumped at the chance.

My event was a cooking class at the relatively new Sur La Table store at The Westchester Mall. I figured, worse case, I learn to cook something new. I have to say, I had A LOT of fun! The way it worked is that we paired off guy/girl at 5 stations around the kitchen, then for each part of the lesson the girls would move to a new station, so everyone got to meet – a cooking round robin if you will. The menu, arranged by the delightful Chef Erica Gorycki, included Paella with Chicken and Chorizo, Grilled Asparagus with Aioli, and Lemon and Marcona Almond cookies. You receive copies of all the recipes and an equipment list so you can try these at home (and of course support Sur La Table buying their goods). You also receive a coupon for 10% off any purchase you make the week of the event.

It was definitely a unique way to meet people and was a fun experience even though I didn’t have any love connections. I would definitely go back to Sur La Table for classes and highly recommend trying a cooking class with them. To look up classes in your area, click here. As far as the Match.com aspect of the event; there was no match.com representative there to help organize the event. They tell you to print out your tickets to bring with you, but there was no RSVP list or “check in” so you feel slightly unsure when you arrive. After the event, you get an email of all the people who had RSVP’d for the event so you can contact anyone of interest. I have another Stir Event in a few weeks with LH. This time it will be a Triva event. We will see how that goes….

February? Really?

February 6, 2013

I can’t believe a whole month has passed me by without stopping in to show some love to my blog! How horrible! Well, I better bring everyone up to speed…

My new job is just wonderful!! I rarely have to stay late and if I do, it is only till about 6pm. Usually I bounce out the door and towards the gym by 5pm. It is such a blessing after my time (and unofficial overtime) at the Internet company that shall not be named.

I have been training my tush off for the Princess Half Marathon which is only 16 days away. I’m going to be running again with My Other Sister and one of her friends that helped me talk her in to another race. To train, I have been “competing” via the Nike+ app with my friend “The Flash” I met the Flash coming home from my Tower of Terror 10 Mile race. She commented on my commemorative pin from the race as we were boarding the plane; she and her brother had run the race as well. When I got off the plane, I saw her again at the luggage carousel and gave her my email and number to possibly run the Sleepy Hollow 10K together.

She has become a good friend and a great motivator to help get my sneakers hitting the pavement more often. It’s funny how the world works sometimes, isn’t it?With her I have committed to running 13 races (of various lengths) in 2013. I have 2 down, eleven to go!  I am going to make a page to track them so keep checking back!

The Flash and I will both be at the PHM and will be doing the Dumbo Double Dare in Disneyland this August. This is a two-day event where we run a 10K on Saturday and a 1/2 Marathon on Sunday. This event will yield us FOUR… count ‘em… FOUR race medals!! 1) Finishing the 10K, 2) Finishing the 1/2, 3) Finishing BOTH (the double dare), and 4) Finishing a “Coast to Coast” – meaning doing a Disneyworld and a Disneyland race in the same year. Pretty awesome for any runner and Disney fan.

February is a big month – Super Bowl, Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, National Short Stack Day (it’s a real thing), Chinese New Year (Year of the Snake) as well as the birthdays of my stepdad and my Aunt Sweetie (I think she is going to be 29 again). I know I already missed the boat on the Super Bowl (actually I didn’t watch it, I started watching the Walking Dead Season 1 marathon and now I’m hooked on zombies) and I missed National Short Stack Day (which is OK cause I’m cutting out carbs for a while) but I will try to keep up with the rest of the month’s events!

A Prayer for Super Dylan

September 19, 2012

Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?  - It’s A Wonderful Life

SuperDylan – illustration by Chris Jevons of Yorkshire, UK

Tonight, I am reaching out to you from a deep place in my heart and asking for help from each of you; tonight I am asking you to pray for Super Dylan. Super Dylan is a child, my friend’s child actually, who is battling through the final stages of brain cancer.

Anyone who knows me, knows I am a big believer in everything happening for a reason. When things don’t go my way, I’m sure there is a reason, something better on its way or something else I need to learn. I can’t and probably will never be able to find a reason why the universe chooses to allow a child to suffer in such a way. I know it is not my place to question the God’s plan, but I don’t understand it allows bad things to happen to good people, innocent people, like sweet Super Dylan!

I’d like to think that my life has been blessed by meeting Dylan, his gifted brother Chandler, his loving mother Jana, and his amazing father, my friend and former colleague, Eric. I believe, knowing these wonderful people has made me a better person; somehow my hardened heart is a bit softer and more compassionate from following their story all these years. The David Family are kind and generous souls, full of positivity and love. They are fighters, every single one of them. So many who know them, or who have heard their story, have been inspired by them.

So tonight I ask you, what ever your beliefs, be it organized religion, your own belief system, or some other mojo out there in the universe, please send your prayers and positive energy with the intent of reaching this family. They have come so far in this journey but soon it will be time for Dylan to let go. Please ask that they are given the strength, support, and love to get through the challenges that lie in the weeks ahead.

Dinning in the Dark – The Souzapalooza Experience

September 4, 2012

|Source = Own work |Date = 2006-05-26 |Author = A.M.R.

A few months back, there was a Bloomspot deal for dinner at Dans Le Noir. Dans Le Noir is a relatively new restaurant in Manhattan, where you eat in the dark. Let me be clear, not in dim lighting, or candle light, but PITCH BLACK DARKNESS. Have you tried this? This has been one of my bucket list items since seeing it on Rock of Love years ago.

Here is how it works. Everyone meets in the bar area, where we go over the menu which is limited to four pre-fixed meals – Red (for meat eaters), Green (for vegetarians), Blue (for seafood lovers), and White (which has no limits – it is pretty much the Chef’s choice as to what you get). The staff also reviews if you have any allergies or food preferences to make sure you get a meal that is safe and to your liking. Once that is established, you are ushered to a locker room to secure your valuables and any light exuding items such as watches or cell phones. Then we are lined up and asked to follow our visually impaired server to our seats in the light sealed room.

Eating in the dark is an amazing experience. Just navigating the table and your interactions with your fellow diners is a feat in its self. Where is your silverware? Where is your napkin? Who is sitting across from you? Where is the water? How do I not spill it all over myself? Is anyone listening to me speaking? How to I get someone’s attention with out completely interrupting them? How do I find the food on my plate? Is this chicken? What am I chewing?

I invited 5 people to tag along with me. I asked everyone to write a review to post of the blog since each persons experience is very unique. I have two of them – some people were slackers – YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!!  However, those I did receive will be posted over the next few days; hopefully you will be influenced in to trying Dans Le Noir for yourself.

My Summer Vacation

June 27, 2012

It is now here! The time of year that all the kids are out of school and get to celebrate Summer Vacation! Gosh how I wish I had one. Sadly, being a member of corporate america, I get the standard two weeks worth of vacation and work 9-6 Monday through Friday the other 50 weeks of the year.

Sigh!

However, just because I don’t have the two month recess that my little friend Pam has to recoup from the strain of first grade and prepare for second grade, that doesn’t mean I am going to be a slave to the corporate grind. I have a few things planed:

  • I am taking a tone and burn class at the gym – the same one I signed up for in March. I have been enjoying it so I enrolled in another eight week session
  • I am taking an art class – it is a two session class where I am going to replicate a painting – should be interesting after my Bob Ross experience
  • I am dinning in the dark with a few friends – Don’t worry, I will tell you all about it
  • I am training for my 10 mile Disney Tower of Terror race in September – I have already logged 33 miles during the month of June!
  • I am trying out a new restaurant – MP Taverna – with the Doc to celebrate her summer vacation (she needs to recoup from her school year too!)
  • I am having tea at the Plaza just like Eloise – a special date in celebration of my little friend Pam’s 7th birthday.

So what are YOU doing for your summer vacation!
