That’s right readers, today is Souzapalooza’s 33rd Birthday!
I thought by 33 I’d be married with a few kids and a flying car, but sadly flying cars haven’t been invented yet. I blame Robert Zemekis for this disappointment… Hill Valley 2015 was teaming with flying cars! The way today’s economy is and infrastructure set up that would be required, i don’t think we would all be able to afford or safely get around in flying vehicle in 3 short years. We don’t even have hoverboards – normal or the powered pit bull ones that float over water!
As for the disappointment in not having a signficant other – I don’t blame myself on this one, I blame John Hughes and Cameron Crowe. I live in a world of perfectly adequate men, but I am patiently waiting for my iconic 80′s boyfriend to bump in to me on the streets of New York. A cross between Jake Ryan and Lloyd Dobler.
Jake Ryan, 16 Candles’ the handsome popular guy who “wants a serious girlfriend…someone [he] can love and that will love [him] back” or so he tells Farmer Ted over pretzels after his insensitive bimbo of a girlfriend, Caroline, wrecks his house. What girl doesn’t want a guy who will admit that?
And can we talk about Lloyd Dobler? John Cusak’s immortalized character from Say Anything. Just an average guy who wants that chance to love a girl, slightly out of his league. He knows what he wants in life. As he proclaims to Dianne’s dad at the end of the movie is “what I really want to do with my life – what I want to do for a living – is I want to be with your daughter. I’m good at it”.
So until I get my flying car and my Jake Ryan/ Lloyd Doble hybrid boyfriend, I will just have to drive my regular car and keep my eyes out for my future husband.

Happy Birthday! Great post, as always. Isn’t it amazing what influence the movies have? I know you are writing with a satirical spin, but in reality the images portrayed really do have an effect on our thinking. Wishing you a great year ahead! Maybe you can fly in a 3D movie sometime soon?
